How to Change the PIN on a Different Device?

Microsoft is suggested to the users that they need to set up a strong password for their device otherwise they would not able to login in their Microsoft account. In the next versions of Windows, Windows is releasing the Windows Hello feature. It is a device specific function to log on to the system by using face-recognition, fingerprint recognition, iris recognition or a PIN. It is an amazing and useful feature for the users. However, to use this feature, first, you need to set-up a password.
During the PIN or biometric identification is a device supposed to be a device specific function, it could be set on multiple devices if the organization’s policy allows it. Here you will get an explanation on why a PIN is better than a password and about its device-specific functionality. The PIN is not good and safe on any server and thus cannot be accessed outside the device, although as we have mentioned earlier, we are able to set up Windows Hello on multiple devices. 

Your password was changed on a different device:-

If you are using Windows Hello feature for Business to set-up the PIN or biometric identification on the multiple devices. If you have to change the account password on one machine would not affect the PIN or biometric identification of another device, since you are using a key or certificate.
Although, if you are not using Windows Hello feature for Business, then you need to change the password on your each associated device. At that moment, you will get the following error:
“Your password was changed on a device. You must sign in to this device once with your new password, and then you can sign in with your PIN.” 

Understanding the problem:- 

Just suppose that you have changed a PIN on your separate device and generated a new password or used an existing one. After changing the password on the same device, the PIN would work as usual since it was set up on the system itself so it can get the change in the password. After that, your password is server specific, not device specific so that it will able to changes on all the associated systems. The PIN on the other systems is linked to that password, although, they are not able to recognize the change since for those systems the change was made on the server. That time, the PIN login would not guarantee success on those systems.

How to Change PIN (or biometric) on non-primary systems?

For the discussion, we are assuming that the primary system was the one on which the PIN was changed initially.
  1. If you are getting this error, you need to click on the OK button and then click on the Sign-in options.
  2. Now, click on the Password option and then you have to login by using the new password. When you have done it, the system would automatically save the new password that you have already changed on the server.
  3. With that, the PIN would also recognize the password that you have changed.
  4. After following these steps, you will be able to login with the new PIN.
  5. The same is true for biometric identification.
